fluorescent dyes Dil or DiO via microinjection to generate a fatemap of the non-neural ectoderm of Xenopus laevis embryos during neurulation. Our lineage analysis confirms that all placodes arise from a common primordium and indicates the regions of origin of the different placodes. We further use time-lapse videomicroscopy to analyse the cell movements and behaviour of ectodermal cells of developing embryos. Our results suggest that the panplacodal primordium divides into different placodes without a large degree of cell sorting in Xenopus.

Dpp Signaling Directs Cell Motility and Invasiveness during Epithelial Morphogenesis
Tissue remodeling in development and disease involves the coordinated invasion of neighboring territories and/or the replacement of entire cell populations. Cell guidance, cell matching, transitions from passive to migratory epithelia, cell growth and death, and extracellular matrix remodeling all impinge on epithelial spreading. Significantly, the extracellular signals that direct these activi...
متن کاملTop–DER- and Dpp-dependent requirements for the Drosophila fos/kayak gene in follicular epithelium morphogenesis
The Drosophila fos (Dfos)/kayak gene has been previously identified as a key regulator of epithelial cell morphogenesis during dorsal closure of the embryo and fusion of the adult thorax. We show here that it is also required for two morphogenetic movements of the follicular epithelium during oogenesis. Firstly, it is necessary for the proper posteriorward migration of main body follicle cells ...
متن کاملDynamic decapentaplegic signaling regulates patterning and adhesion in the Drosophila pupal retina.
The correct organization of cells within an epithelium is essential for proper tissue and organ morphogenesis. The role of Decapentaplegic/Bone morphogenetic protein (Dpp/BMP) signaling in cellular morphogenesis during epithelial development is poorly understood. In this paper, we used the developing Drosophila pupal retina--looking specifically at the reorganization of glial-like support cells...
متن کاملmTOR Directs Breast Morphogenesis through the PKC-alpha-Rac1 Signaling Axis
Akt phosphorylation is a major driver of cell survival, motility, and proliferation in development and disease, causing increased interest in upstream regulators of Akt like mTOR complex 2 (mTORC2). We used genetic disruption of Rictor to impair mTORC2 activity in mouse mammary epithelia, which decreased Akt phosphorylation, ductal length, secondary branching, cell motility, and cell survival. ...
متن کاملNa,K-ATPase beta-subunit is required for epithelial polarization, suppression of invasion, and cell motility.
The cell adhesion molecule E-cadherin has been implicated in maintaining the polarized phenotype of epithelial cells and suppression of invasiveness and motility of carcinoma cells. Na,K-ATPase, consisting of an alpha- and beta-subunit, maintains the sodium gradient across the plasma membrane. A functional relationship between E-cadherin and Na,K-ATPase has not previously been described. We pre...
